Baskets are some of the most versatile, decorative, and useful items you can use in your home decorating. They come in a large assortment of sizes, shapes, and colors and can be picked up at a reasonable price everywhere from discount stores to home decorating outlets. You can put your baskets to good use by looking around your apartment and deciding what items would look great contained in wicker baskets. Some ideas for wicker basket use include the following: Storing toys. Use large baskets for bigger toys and small ones for things like cards and game pieces. Also keep them low so kids can easily retrieve and return toys. Trash cans. Try an inexpensive basket instead of a plastic trash can in every room. Cooking utensils. Place your often-used cooking utensils in attractive baskets right on your kitchen counter for a decorative touch and easy access to tools. (Keep the baskets fairly tall so utensils don't fall out.) Correspondence. Create incoming and outgoing correspondence baskets so mail doesn't scatter. Periodicals. Place newspapers and magazines in rectangular wicker baskets and situate them strategically where these periodicals are typically read. Food. Keep bread, fruit, and other edibles in baskets on your counters or kitchen table. Clothing and accessories. Large baskets can catch clothes that need to be laundered, while small to medium-sized baskets keep collections of scarves and belts tidy. Books. You know all those awkward little books you have lying around, like software manuals and appliance instructions? Keep them in baskets, and you can slide them right onto a bookshelf. They'll be accessible when you need them but won't create an eyesore. Crafting supplies. Arrange paper, paints, rubber stamps, knitting tools, and other crafting supplies in baskets with handles so you can pick them up and move them to the crafting location of your choice whenever you feel inspired. Office supplies. Control home office clutter by storing office supplies (and even files) in a variety of decorative baskets. APARTMENT TIPS DISPLAY TECHNIQUES If setting out a collection on a table or shelf just doesn't seem creative enough for you, there are many ways to create unique, cost-conscious displays. Here are some possibilities: Window shelves. For items such as colored glass bottles, place glass shelves in a window and line up the bottles. Eliminate your window treatment, and you'll be able to enjoy sunlight dancing through each color to create a spectacular show. Baskets. Is there anything that doesn't look great in baskets? Use baskets to hold everything from baseball caps to books to ethnic rug collections. Shadow boxes. If you have a collection of old jewelry, movie ticket stubs, keys, postcards, or anything that doesn't have a lot of physical depth, try pinning or otherwise attaching these items to backing (e.g., velvet) and hanging them on the wall in a shadow box frame for all to enjoy. Bowls. A silver or crystal bowl is a terrific way (though perhaps not an obvious one) to display a Native American belt or beaded necklace collection. Molding shelves. You can buy them premade or make your own (just buy molding at a home improvement or building supplies store). These shelves are sleek and unobtrusive, and you can place them high on your wall out of the way for delicate collections, such as breakable figurines. Humorous displays. Even if you're a serious collector, you don't need to have a serious display! Try inserting a little humor into your collection display, such as hanging your garden tool collection on a homemade scarecrow or displaying your travel memorabilia in an old suitcase. |
