HOLIDAYS Print E-mail

Everyone has a favorite holiday. For me, it's Christmas, with the smells, the twinkling lights, and the music floating through the air. One of my friends loves Easter because of the pastel colors and the fresh spring air. Plus, she really loves bunny rabbits.

When it comes to celebrating holidays, decorating your apartment in a special way can be lots of fun, particularly if the holiday will include a gathering at your place for family or friends. But I was struck in recent years by the cost of holiday decorations. On a recent Christmas shopping trip to a popular home decorating store, I was shocked at the cost of ornaments and other decorative items.

If you're the type that likes to decorate up a storm to celebrate holidays, it can be discouraging to learn that seasonal decorations can often break your bank. It's even more discouraging when you consider that these decorations are temporary, pulled out for just a few weeks a year.

But then I remembered back to when I was a child, and I realized that holiday decorating was once a very simple, inexpensive undertaking. Remember when garland was something made from string, popcorn, and cranberries? And of course, coloring real eggs at Easter is a fond memory for many people.

When you approach holiday decorating, try to remember that you're doing more than decoratingyou're creating a memory. While a box of expensive, crystal ornaments from a department store may be beautiful to look at, decorating plain glass with your neighbor or your niece not only results in a decorative item, it creates a warm memory that you'll recall each year as you decorate your tree.

APARTMENT TIPS NATURE

Accessories don't just come from stores. In fact, some of the nicest accessories come from nature. Adding these "green accessories" to your apartment can add something no inanimate object can-life. Try these simple ideas:

An herb garden in a windowbox mounted inside your kitchen window
Curtain tiebacks made from grapevine
Topiaries - real or fake
Arrangements that include fruit, leaves, and flowers
Potted plants - from small enough for your windowsill to tree-size
